Lessons of the Hour, a solo exhibition by Isaac Julien, opens to the public this Sunday, May 17, at MoMA, in New York.

Across the 10-channel video installation, recently acquired by the institution, Julien presents an immersive portrait of the life of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, creating a nonlinear narrative that melds Douglass’s life and work with excerpts from several of his productions and personal correspondence. For the first time, historical objects directly related to Lessons of the Hour, which inspired Julien to create this piece, will be on view alongside the work.

The exhibition remains on view at MoMA through September 28
