americas society, new york
4.9 - 14.12.2024

Tomie Ohtake participates in The Appearance, a group exhibition that focuses on the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean from the 1940s to the present. The exhibition features the work of thirty artists from fifteen countries across various artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, performance, photography, and video, exploring common themes and strategies in Asian diasporic practices. Inspired by the eponymous print by Japanese-Brazilian artist Lydia Okumura, the show investigates the complexities of (in)visibility, the recreation of family archives and stories, as well as spiritual practices.

Co-curated by Tie Jojima and Yudi Rafael, the exhibition also addresses abstraction as a formal strategy related to language, the senses, and the body in the context of post-war art in the Americas. The show highlights the often-overlooked experiences and artistic trajectories of Asian subjects and collectives in Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasizing both their unique contributions and their role in broader transnational histories. A catalogue will be published, and a series of public programs will accompany the exhibition.

The exhibition will be on view from September 4 to December 14 at the Americas Society in New York.
