Dan Graham (n. Urbana/Illinois, EUA, 1942) é um dos principais expoentes da arte conceitual, amplamente reconhecido por sua consistente produção intelectual e artística que, desde o início de sua carreira, em meados da década de 1960, se baseia no diálogo entre arte e arquitetura e no debate sobre as relações entre obra de arte, espaço urbano e público no contexto da cultura de massas. Em 1962 fundou a Galeria John Daniels em Nova York, onde passou a apresentar e promover o trabalho de jovens artistas então emergentes no cenário artístico da cidade – dentre eles, Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd e outros nomes fundamentais ligados ao conceitualismo e ao minimalismo. Neste período, sob influência dessas tendências artísticas e dos debates teóricos na época em destaque sobre indústria cultural, Graham começou a realizar suas próprias propostas, articulando prática curatorial, diversas linguagens (fotografia, vídeo, performance, escultura e instalação) e uma profunda reflexão crítica sobre assuntos de seu interesse, como arquitetura, televisão e música popular.
Em Homes for America (1966), série fotográfica que documenta o desenvolvimento dos subúrbios de Nova Jersey (EUA), publicado como foto-ensaio na revista ArtsMagazine em 1966, apresenta a minuciosa pesquisa de Graham sobre os modelos de habitação popular norte-americana pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial, sendo acompanhada por um ensaio no qual o artista relaciona e problematiza questões como economia do uso da terra, indústria imobiliária e a produção artística serializada própria do período.
O engajamento crítico de Graham manifesta-se de forma ainda mais contundente a partir do final da década de 1970, quando começa a realizar sua famosa série Pavilion, composta por estruturas compostas principalmente por vidro espelhado. No limiar entre arquitetura, escultura e site-specific, estes pavilhões normalmente constituídos em formas simples (geométricas ou curvas), apresentam em sua superfície uma sobreposição de reflexos distorcidos do espaço ao redor, combinando interior e exterior e, consequentemente, desorientando a percepção do público.
Nos últimos anos, Graham vem realizando importantes exposições individuais e retrospectivas em instituições ao redor do mundo, além de ter participado de várias edições da Documenta de Kassel (1972, 1977, 1982, 1992, 1997) e da Bienal de Veneza (1976, 2003, 2005). Também bastante premiado no decorrer de sua carreira, o artista recebeu em 2010 uma honraria da American Academy of Arts and Letters, entidade norte-americana responsável por reconhecer o mérito de personalidades que trouxeram contribuições importantes para o meio cultural do país.
