Works by Amelia Toledo, Paulo Bruscky, Sérgio Sister, and Antonio Dias are featured in the exhibition Pop Brasil: vanguard and new figuration, 1960–70, on view at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo through October 5, 2025. Curated by Pollyana Quintella and Yuri Quevedo, the show brings together around 250 works by more than 100 artists, offering a broad overview of the visual experiments that marked Brazilian art during the 1960s and 70s—a period of intense political, cultural, and social transformation.

The exhibition commemorates 60 years since the landmark shows ‘Opinião 65’ and ‘Propostas 65’, which introduced new directions in Brazilian art in response to the country’s military dictatorship and the growing influence of mass culture. Many of the featured works incorporate accessible graphic language, everyday symbols, political irony, and visual collages that blur the boundaries between art and life.

‘Pop Brasil’ also celebrates 10 years of the Roger Wright Collection’s long-term loan to the museum—one of the most significant public collections dedicated to Brazilian production from this era. Divided into thematic sections, the exhibition establishes connections between diverse artistic approaches from the period, including happenings, performances, mail art, and urban interventions.

The show opens with the original flags from the “Happening das Bandeiras,” held in 1968 at Praça General Osório (Rio de Janeiro), which brought together artists such as Nelson Leirner and Carmela Gross in a collective occupation of public space.
