voile/toile – toile/voile

museu de arte moderna do rio de janeiro, brazil
28.1 - 12.4.2026

The exhibition Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile (Sail/Canvas – Canvas/Sail), by Daniel Buren, opens to the public tomorrow, January 28, at MAM Rio. The eponymous project was presented in Brazil for the first time on January 22, through a regatta-performance in Guanabara Bay, featuring eleven Optimist-class sailboats equipped with sails incorporating the artist’s characteristic vertical stripes.

Following the action, the sails become part of the exhibition and are installed on self-supporting structures, arranged rigorously according to the order in which the boats arrived in the regatta. With exhibition design by Sol Camacho, the show presents the displacement of the project from the maritime space to the exhibition space, while maintaining the protocol established by Buren since the earliest editions of the work.
