Nara Roesler is pleased to present Nara Roesler Books, a new phase of the gallery's publishing initiative, which has produced state-of-the-art publications since its inception in 2011. Conceived with the purpose of fomenting critical thought around contemporary artistic practice in Brazil through the production of carefully crafted books, the gallery has edited 21 publications over a period of nine years under the umbrella of Associação para o Patronato Contemporâneo, APC.

Specializing in monographic publications, Nara Roesler Books' portfolio contemplates the careers of some of Brazil’s most important artists, and now also offers an online bookshop, accessible on the gallery's website and Instagram.

Seeking to reach a diverse audience, expanding the interest of specialized and general public alike our books will consistently be launched in two different versions: Portuguese and English. In this enticing new phase, Nara Roesler Books will present the audience with three editorial lines: Monographs, Cutouts and Essays, published under the guidance of writer, poet and curator Luis Pérez-Oramas who will act as the Senior Curatorial Director.

The Monograph strandintends to present definitive references for the artists careers, acting as visual testimonials and permanent research resources for each artists’ trajectories. Having at its core a thorough research process, these editions will contain historical as well as newly-commissioned texts by some of the most relevant art critics, curators and other specialists in each artists’ areas of interest. We are very proud to announce that the first book in this strand will be launched in December 2021, under the editorial direction of Luiz Camillo Osório, and will approach the life and work of iconic kinetic artist Abraham Palatnik (1928-2020). During Spring 2022, Nara Roesler Books will launch the second volume, dedicated to the work of Carlito Carvalhosa (1962-2021), under the editorial direction of Luis Pérez-Oramas.

In the Cutouts strand, the publications will frame a specific aspect of an artist’s career or work, such as a given series in their trajectory, an important exhibition or a special project. These volumes will be printed in smaller edition numbers, and will include original texts and images to illustrate the themes addressed. The first book in the Cutout series will be launched in December 2021, and will focus on Vik Muniz's Handmade and Surfaces series.

Our third strand, titled Essays, is an unprecedented editorial initiative that undertakes the task to bring for the first time to English-speaking audiences, essential texts of Latin American art that reflect some of its most important moments in history. In Brazil these pocket-books will be edited, in collaboration with the Martins Fontes publishing house, and will in time, form an unavoidable anthology of Latin American artistic critique.

For this new phase, Nara Roesler Books will be distributed at Martins Fontes bookstores. With this, the publications will not only be available for purchase online, but also in all Martins Fontes stores in Sao Paulo.
