Rivane Neuenschwander and Cao Guimarães’s Quarta-Feira de Cinzas/Epilogue is currently on view in Down to Earth, a group exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Filmed on Ash Wednesday (Quarta-Feira de Cinzas in Portuguese, which marks the beginning of Lent), the work centers on a colony of ants that symbolize the weight of clearing away the remnants of Carnival’s revelry. As the ants diligently transport shimmering confetti fragments from a ground-level perspective, the artists contrast scenes of celebration and reflections on collaboration and labor.
Down to Earth is on view at the Museum of Modern Art, second floor, 216 Collection Gallery.
