Nara Roesler congratulates Alberto Pitta on his participation in the 36ª Bienal de São Paulo!
The 36ª Bienal de São Paulo, titled ‘Nem todo viandante anda estradas – Da humanidade como prática’, will be led by chief curator Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, in collaboration with co-curators Alya Sebti, Anna Roberta Goetz, Thiago de Paula Souza, Keyna Eleison, and consultant Henriette Gallus. Inspired by a poem by Conceição Evaristo, the exhibition invites reflection on humanity as a living practice, emphasizing listening, coexistence, and negotiation between different worlds.
Alberto Pitta is an artist whose work transcends cultural and geographical boundaries. With over four decades of experience, he is widely recognized for his significant contribution to the Salvador Carnival, especially through his Afro-Bahian prints created for iconic groups such as Olodum, Filhos de Gandhy, and his own bloco, Cortejo Afro. His practice encompasses screen printing, painting, and sculpture, and is deeply influenced by the Yoruba worldview and Afro-Brazilian spiritual traditions.
Recently, Pitta has taken part in exhibitions around the world, including Learning Flamboyance – Collective Joy! (2025) at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; the 24th Biennale of Sydney (2024), Australia; the Dakar Biennale (2024), Senegal; O Quilombismo: Of Resisting and Insisting. Of Flight as Fight. Of Other Democratic Egalitarian Political Philosophies (2023) at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; and Stirring the Pot (2024) at Casa de Cultura da Comporta, Portugal. His participation in the 36ª Bienal de São Paulo follows this same trajectory and further highlights his role as one of the foremost contemporary artists engaging with Afro-Brazilian traditions in dialogue with global contemporary art.
In parallel with the Bienal, in September, Alberto Pitta will open his first solo exhibition at Nara Roesler São Paulo, followed by his debut at Nara Roesler New York in November, in a duo show alongside artist Elian Almeida.
