JR opens Adventice at Carré Sainte-Anne in Montpellier, after seven years of renovation, Carré Sainte-Anne reopens its doors with Adventice, a new exhibition by French artist JR, curated by Numa Hambursin. On view from June 27 to December 7, 2025, the show transforms the former church with a monumental installation that weaves together art, botany, and local history.
Inspired by a little-known episode in Montpellier’s past, the unexpected growth of exotic plant species along the banks of the Lez River, brought by seeds hidden in wool bales imported from around the world during the Middle Ages, JR presents a poetic metaphor for migration, diversity, and coexistence. A tree made of 10,000 hands, cast from residents of the city, spreads through the central nave as a symbol of the collective construction of a shared future.
