Invenção de origem has as a starting point the film The Origin of the Night: Amazon Cosmos (1973-77), by German artist Lothar Baumgarten, never screened in Brazil, and includes a selection of works by four Brazilian artists - Antonio Dias, Carmela Gross, Solange Pessoa, and Tunga. Curated by the Núcleo de Pesquisa e Crítica da Pinacoteca, coordinated by museum director José Augusto Ribeiro, the selections focus on a very specific type of Brazilian artistic production, comprising of about 40 works by the artists mentioned above, including video, painting, sculpture, etc. produced from 1970 to today. The curation focused on works experimenting with language and material , which - at the same time - convert themselves into timeless images and objects, suggestive of having gesture as a groundwork, thereby inserting the spectator into a sort of system of production or communication of ideas still in formation.
