sensory poetics: collecting abstraction

solomon r. guggenheim museum, new york
7.7 - 17.10.2022

Untitled (2019-2020), a representative work from Carlito Carvalhosa's late wax series, is now part of the permanent collection of the The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York. On this series, the artist's hands and fingers become visible as traces that emerge from the pictorial plane, inverting the classical proposition of painting, in which the gesture is deposited on the surface.

The work is now on view at the museum as part of Sensory Poetics: Collecting Abstraction, on view through October 17. The exhibition will present highlights from the Guggenheim Museum’s growing collection of contemporary art and covers a cross-section of diverse aesthetic approaches taken by artists originating from Europe and the Americas, expanding the narratives of the story of abstraction.
