alafiou

museu de arte moderna da bahia, salvador, bahia
8.1 - 22.2.2026

The exhibition Alafiou, an unprecedented solo show by Alberto Pitta curated by Daniel Rangel, is currently on view at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia. On display from November 2025 to February 2026, the exhibition brings together approximately 45 years of the artist’s production, with Afro-Brazilian culture at the core of his practice.

Inspired by a saying by Mãe Stella de Oxóssi, “what is not recorded, time takes away”, Alafiou highlights Pitta’s commitment to preserving and renewing forms of knowledge traditionally transmitted through orality, which in his work unfold into image, graphic language, and gesture. The exhibition presents works across different media, including drawing, collage, design, costume, and installation, articulating tradition and invention.

Known for his work in the Salvador carnival and as the founder of Cortejo Afro, Alberto Pitta has developed a trajectory marked by the dialogue between the sacred and the profane. Alafiou is part of a trilogy conceived by MAM Bahia dedicated to artists from Bahia who expand the dialogue between art, popular culture, and contemporaneity, drawing on the ideas of Lina Bo Bardi.
