whirligig (molinete)

museu de arte moderna do rio de janerio (mam rio), rio de janeiro, brasil
13.11.2021 - 30.1.2022

First created for the exhibition Minimalismo, Posminimalismo y Conceptualismo 60-70 at Fundación Proa in Buenos Aires (2019), Whirligig, by Dan Graham, is presented for the first time in Brazil, in the outside area of the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro ( MAM Rio). With more than five decades of production, Graham is one of the main exponents of conceptual art still producing today. In the interstice between architecture, sculpture, and site-specific, its structures of simple shapes – geometric or curved – overlap a series of reflections – visual and cognitive – on the surrounding space, combining interior and exterior, questioning the public's perception. According to curators Beatriz Lemos, Keyna Eleison, and Pablo Lafuente "The double circular structure with bidirectional and transparent mirrors suggests a receptacle that is at the same time a showcase and a labyrinth; a space in which light variation transforms the mirrors' reflection condition, causing time-space perceptions to change when we interact with the work."
