Lessons of the Hour,–a poetic meditation on the life and times of Frederick Douglass presented as a ten-screen film installation–, by Isaac Julien, now can also be experienced as a book. The publication is a visual and literary meditation juxtaposing Isaac Julien’s artworks with archival images of Frederick Douglass and essays that consider his enduring legacy.

Published by Isaac Julien Studio with the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, and the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery*, the lush and ambitious volume captures the dual atmospheres of historical importance and modern context. The book contains richly illustrated essays, documentation of the installation at various venues, extended visual and textural experiences, and recurring object lessons in photography and representation.

Lessons of the Hour is now available for preorder DelMonico website.
