Cristina Canale is a representative of the so-called "Generation 80", as it was known the movement that marked the Brazilian scene in the mid-1980s, in line with the process of painting resumption in the international context. Since then, she has been developing a consistent oeuvre that deepens recurrent pictorial issues in that period. Generally based on prosaic everyday scenes, often extracted from advertising photography, her works are the result of an elaborate work of composition with masses of color, being distinguished by transiting between a figurative that merges in the abstraction and an abstraction that evokes the figurative.

The artist, as well as the main names of her generation, get to the prominence as from her participation in the emblematic group exhibition Como vai você, Geração 80?, presented at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV Parque Lage), Rio de Janeiro, 1984. Like many of her colleagues, her early works denotes the influence of international new painting, especially the tendency of German Neo-expressionism. Loaded with visual elements and volume of paint, her early paintings have a material appearance, distinguished by the intuitive use of contrasting and vivid colors that is remarkable in her works to this day. In the early 1990s, Canale moved to Germany, studying in Düsseldorf under the guidance of the Dutch conceptual artist Jan Dibbets. Her compositions pass to acquiring spatiality, with the suggestion of planes and depths, and greater fluidity in the use of colors.

Cristina Canale was born in Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Brazil, 1961, and lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She studied drawing and painting at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV Parque Lage), Rio de Janeiro, in the early 1980’s. Her work has been presented in several exhibitions, among which the following solo exhibitions stand out: Cristina Canale: Zwischen den Welten, Kunstforum Markert Gruppe, Hamburg, Germany (2015); Entremundos, Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Brazil (2014); Protagonista e Domingo, Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz (IFF), Ribeirão Preto/SP, Brazil (2013); Arredores e Rastros, Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio), Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Brazil (2010); and Cristina Canale,Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo/SP, Brazil (2007). She participated in the 6th Bienal de Curitiba, Curitiba/PR, Brazil (2011), and in the 21st Bienal Internacional de Arte de São Paulo, São Paulo/SP, Brazil (1991), in which she was awarded with the Prêmio Governador do Estado [Governor State Prize]. She received a scholarship from the State of Brandenburg, performing an artistic project at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf (Wiepersdorf Castle), Wiepersdorf (1993), and a scholarship of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauch Dienst (DAAD) to study at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf (1993-1995), both in Germany. Edges of the body have been present for a long time in Cristina Canale’s work. If Talkative (2018), one of her recent paintings, pushes into the foreground a sort of speech-razor able to cut the face – that monolith which, in a portrait, tends to marginalize everything else – this figure-background relationship is an echo of other angularities of her career, already expressed, for example, in her paintings from 1985. Just as in Talkative the portrait is a sort of trigger for the dispute between the hierarchies of the composition, at that moment a kiss was the theme for an inevitable tear in the space where the painting was operating. Constituted by cut-out and glued parts, the painting from 33 years ago did not have its bodies split by the background, but tore the space with its pictorial body, elbowing it in a hug. Cristina Canale, Untitled, 1985 As an embryo, it already evinced the artist’s interest for what she circumscribes as “tension in the coexistence between contradictions,”...
